Day 5 - Challis to North Fork

The finish of Day 4 included some very fun single track that ended near Sun Valley Ski Resort. We had heard that the single track in this area was superb, so Day 5 started with ~30 miles of asphalt taking us South back to Ketchem. Here we would pick-up the single track that was leftover from Day 4's itinerary.

The trail started as a dirt road, that became a jeep road, that lead to our tight single track trail. The trail was technical and only 8 inches wide at times. The trail took us through steep terrain where we traversed the hill sides as we made a long assent to the summit.

The Statistics for the day were as follows:
Max Elevation – 9,836 ft
Total Ascent – 17,705 ft
Total Miles – 191
Avg Speed – 28.1 mph
Top Speed – 75 mph

About half way into the accent, Todd took a tumble off his bike on a steep hillside. As he attempted to soften his fall with his right arm, he suffered a radial fracture on the bone just above the elbow. This made riding painful as his right arm is necessary for throttle control and stability. Any force against his arm toward the elbow gave him intense pain. Todd was tough and rode his bike to the nearest road that intersected our trail (it was a long way). We all helped Todd through the tough sections that required extra effort.

Once we intersected the road, Todd and Bill rode back to meet Paul, while Ed and Keith continued to ride the planned trails for the day. These trails consisted of a fun stretch of single track followed by fire road and jeep trails to took us to 9,800 feet and back down to the Salmon River valley.

We ate a late lunch in Challis at the local bowling alley. Bill and Todd ate at 3:00 PM, while Ed and Keith rolled in at about 4:00 PM.

After lunch, we had a 75 mile stretch of asphalt before meeting up with Paul in North Fork at Wagonhammer RV Park & Campground.
